I've noticed something peculiar as I bounce between 9.3 and 9.2 boot devices: in one instance, 9.3 claimed that "The pool was last accessed by another system".

That's true, but I did shut down 9.2.1.9 cleanly. Does that not typically leave the volume in a state where it can be imported by 9.3 on the same hardware? I had assumed that shutdown was largely equivalent to exporting, but perhaps that's not the case?

No, shutdown is completely different from exporting. I think it's pretty obvious that they're different operations (exporting a pool doesn't turn off the computer), but the part that might not be as obvious is that the shutdown doesn't include an export.

Thanks, that is what I was asking.

What's the practical difference to a pool between safe shutdown and exporting? (Other than marking it as "exported" as opposed to last used by a specific host?)

Or, to reinforce the OP's question, is it desirable/important to export the pool before shutdown and rebooting into a different instance, possibly a different release, of Freenas? So far I have noticed no problem swapping between 9.2.1.8, 9.3 Beta and 9.2.1.9 by rebooting with no export.
