I'm new to Freenas, I decided to install on an old laptop to just play around with it before I build/install on a real system.

I was able to install Freenas on a USB and boot from it. I can see/use graphical interface from a different computer, but i'm having trouble restarting/shutting down the server from either the user interface or actually manually from the laptop. It just kind of hangs after shutting down the various daemons.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should start to troubleshoot?
Also, where do I see/find logs?

(if i manually shut it down and turn it back on, freenas does come back up normally)

Sounds like older hardware. From man shutdown:

The system is halted and the power is turned off (hardware support required)

Nothing is going to work quite right on a laptop. We don't recommend laptops, even for experimenting/learning, because their hardware is virtually never supported on FreeBSD. It's hard to learn a new OS if the OS isn't even compatible with the hardware its running on. ;)

yea its an older laptop; To clarifying what you are saying, you're suggesting that it won't power off because freeBSD (and therefore freenas) won't shutdown [like actually power down] because the software doesn't support my laptop?

Would it be better to try to vituralbox a FreeNas? I wanted to try to handle plugins and jails as well, which i can't really assume works well on a that.....

If it helps i'm running a x32; 9.2.1.8 ;
its an old dell laptop
