BUILD Shall I Shoot Myself Now? AKA - Cooling my 1st FreeNAS Build Without a Fan on the Heatsink?

OK, guys, forgive my lack of familiarity with FreeNAS & server issues, this is my 1st NAS & I'm probably being way too cautious, but heat is a killer & I am always trying to keep temps down on the boxes I build, so here's my concern...

I dropped more than I probably should have on a motherboard for simply serving media to the entire house, as well as to provide a central location for work/documents we use at home for business. Eventually, we want to be able to utilize the server from our satellite/remote office locations as well, but for now I just want to be able to stream throughout the house... we have computers in every room these day (7).

The Supermicro A2SDi-H-TP4F has the embedded Intel Atom C3955 with a simple heat-sink attached; no fan... this seems wrong to me, despite everything I read telling me the Intel Atom's produce very little heat. Can that be true when streaming to a few rooms in the house at once, hi-res video, etc, i.e high workload?

On Supermicro's website, on the specifications page for this mobo, they show a couple of chassis' optimized for that motherboard, & 2 of the 3 images there, show a small fan attached to the heat-sinks. Anyone have a suggestion as to what fan I might use & how to attach? I have been planning to use the Fractal Design Node 804 case, but I have been thinking maybe I should use the Coolermaster Cosmos I have laying around here for this board if I can't find an applicable fan... It's a freakin' massive beast, I wanted to get rid of it but maybe it's a better idea? On that little 6.7" x 6.7" board, I could get a lot of airflow over that heat-sink without an attached fan in that specific case, & the more I am thinking about it, the better it sounds, as far as heat is concerned... I was trying to create a small footprint & keep it in my home office, but I think putting the server in a closet I have, centrally located in the house, might be a better solution. Low temps are FAR more important than a noisy box, especially if it is not anywhere near anyone. The tiny cases always concern me, so much heat generating electronics in a compact size seems to be asking for problems.

Has anyone ever used a small closet as a server room? Again, I am concerned about temps even in that closet. I designed a way to have a small window air-conditioner to vent into that room, but I was thinking that a small air conditioner like that might create too much condensation... any thoughts on that would be welcomed as well...

The TDP of the Atom C3955, according to ARK, is only 32W. So long as your case has adequate airflow, this amount of heat output is within the capabilities of a passive heatsink as installed.

I agree that with adequate airflow it would be fine, but therein is my concern... with 8 SATA drives in the Fractal Design-Node 804 case, some of the space I might otherwise utilize for fans is not available & it looks to me like adequate airflow is an issue; both over the board & over the drives. Since my entire experience with building systems has been desktop computer builds, I am being somewhat cautious with this 1st box. I remember the 1st computer I built in the early 90's, I was afraid to hit the power button the 1st time, even though I knew I had done everything right... I waited 2 damn days & took the thing apart & put it back together 3 times before I hit, "Power On", & of course, all was fine.

I really wanted a small footprint... Check it out, for years I have been collecting media, since before the Napster days, actually, so I have simply used big cases (Lian Li & Coolermaster), running Win. XP, 7, & now 10, & a bunch of drives, with zero redundancy & no backups. The Cooler Master Cosmos 2 Ultra I am currently using has 16 4TB drives in it. I monitor the drives very carefully with HardDiskSentinel, but I recently had a drive just fail, with less than a 1000 hours on it & lost all the data; everything was finew until it was not - it freakin' happens! I had been thinking of FreeNAS for a while & that was my wake-up call. I wanted to get rid of that massive case, but i am not so certain I should do so, it is a great case, I am just tired of the thing in my office, I need to move it elsewhere in the house & I guess it would be fine.

I'm thinking I may split my data up between 2 different FreeNAS systems & build a 2nd box, use some of the 4TB drives I am going to have after I move the data onto the new NAS. Can anyone point me to an inexpensive design/build I might purchase for the 2nd box? My wife will kill me if I spend anywhere near as much on a 2nd box as I did on this 1st build...

Apparently Noctua is going to build a monster fanless passive heatsink, but it's delayed. Click on the pictures in the following blog post for a little more info. LGA115x/AM4 for 120-180W TDP depending on case internal airflow. Definitely a big boy, so not for small cases...

Yikes, that's a monster, but if I use the Cooler Master Case, that might be worth looking into, as long as they are releasing it soon. Thanks for the info!
