Okay. @tobiasbp if you're up for it, can you try setting the following auxiliary parameter under Services->SMB to see if samba starts winbind nested groups = no

On FreeNAS11.2-U2

A: SAMBA is running, with Directory Service -> LDAP disabled
B: Stop service SMB from GUI
C: Adding winbind nested groups = no in section auxiliary parameter under Services->SMB
D: Starting service SMB from GUI. OK, running
E: Stopping service SMB from GUI
F: Enabling directory service LDAP in GUI.
G: Starting service SMB from GUI. OK, running!!
H: Logging in to SMB share as user in LDAP: OK

Problem of SAMBA not starting up when users are "pulled in" from LDAP seems to be fixed. Thank you!

I added the solution to the 1st post in this thread. I added "SOLVED" to the subject.

I added the solution to the 1st post in this thread. I added "SOLVED" to the subject.
Before you mark it as "solved", I think I found the regression in samba. If you feel super adventurous, I have some patched samba-related binaries I'll send via PM in a second. Clone your boot environment (because this is going to be very redneck) and extract them into /usr/local/lib/samba4/private, then restart samba without the "nested groups" parameter.
