Hi,

I attached a picture of what I'm getting when I try to restart my FreeNAS system.
- FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201503150158
- Intel i5 3rd generation
- 2 usb thumb drives for OS (mirrored)
- RAIDZ1 for storage

I wanted to update to the latest release of FreeNAS but the download didn't seem to work so I cancelled it.
I rebooted.
Eversince then I get this annoying grub error which won't let me boot my system.

The download and upgrade was probably working just fine and you killed it midstream. USB writes can be painfully slow. You'll need to reinstall and then import your pool.

Normally when I click "check now" and then "upgrade now" it starts to download first. This is shown with a status bar. The status bar never left 0%.
I really don't think it was already installing.
Anyhow, I will try to reinstall.
Can I read my old configuration from the leftover USB drive?

Hard to know what actually happened. It could maybe be a bad USB stick as well. The mirroring of a boot device doesn't do much for you during the initial boot stages. You could try booting from the alternate USB and see if that's any happier. If that works, then I'd say the first USB is fail-y and needs replacement.

Either way, copies of your config are stashed on the system partition on your pool, so you should be able to recover it if you end up needing to reinstall on some new USB devices.

I reinstalled FreeNAS but my config backup was sadly some weeks old. Luckily the GELI key was there and I was able to import the volume

Thanks so much for your help.
I will create configuration backups more regularly in the future.

Ow ow ow! That'd definitely be hurt if you couldn't get to the pool because the only copy of the config was encrypted on the pool.

Yes, that would have been incredibly stupid.
Luckily I had a config and a key there
