Hi guys,
I've been reading a lot in this Forum. Thanks for all the information!!
I am building my first FreeNAS / TrueNAS (Core) soon and not sure yet about my SAS HBA controllers.
I've got these components already:
Here in Germany it's not so easy to get a used LSI HBA's (9207 / 9211), which is recommended often.
There are a few Dell H310 SAS HBA's on ebay though.

I am building my first FreeNAS / TrueNAS (Core) soon and not sure yet about my SAS HBA controllers.
I've got these components already:
- Supermicro X9SCM-F
- Intel Xeon E3 1230v2
- 32 GB ECC 1600 RAM
- 6 x 6TB WD Red Plus
Here in Germany it's not so easy to get a used LSI HBA's (9207 / 9211), which is recommended often.
There are a few Dell H310 SAS HBA's on ebay though.
- If I understand it correctly, they are identical to the LSI 9211 and use the same same chipset (SAS2008). Is that correct?
- The Dell H310 is recommended in the Hardware Guide, but LSI seems more popular. Are they better?
- I am planning to use only 6 drives now (1vdev) and get another 6 drives next year. Is it recommended to use 2 absolute identical HBA's? Or could I use a SAS2008 now and see what I can find next year, e.g a SAS2308. Can I use one Dell H310 and one LSI 9211?
- General question to used HBA's: Obviously I don't know the history of a used controller. If it fails, is there a risk of corrupting my data? Can I just replace the controller? Or would you recommend buying new ones?
