"Destroy" will remove the snapshots. Are you sure you didn't only "Detach"? If so, then "import" will find it.

My bad--as I'd kind of suspected, destroying the dataset destroys all snapshots associated with that dataset. See http://doc.freenas.org/9.10/freenas_storage.html#view-volumes:
Destroy Dataset: if you click the “Destroy Dataset” button, the browser will turn red to indicate that this is a destructive action. The “Destroy Dataset” screen forces you to check the box “I’m aware this will destroy all child datasets and snapshots within this dataset” before it will perform this action.
Restore from backup.

Does the GUI allow you to detach a dataset?
Yes. In fact, the only way to destroy in the GUI, is to choose "Detach" and then select the option to "Destroy".

We're dealing with a dataset, not a pool.

Doh! Good point. No you can't detach a dataset.

Well, you can unmount a dataset from the CLI, which is pretty much the same thing--but AFAIK, there's no way to do that from the GUI.

Clicking Yes on that dialog will permanently destroy the dataset and all its snapshots. The only way to recover is to restore from backup.
