FreeNAS-8.0-RELEASE-i386
FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p1

Built a simple RAID1 with two 1Tb drives, Seagate and a WD. Created the volume and shared it out. Copied a ton of stuff onto the volume from my pc, and it's been stuck in DEGRADED since. The second drive (Seagate) had the option to "Replace" which I did. Is it stuck in sync atm?

Ran fsck and it all checked out ok.

I've searched around quite a bit and can't find more info on why this is happening.

Hi jack, im testing the drive replacement process (using raid1) in a vm enviroment (virtualbox) using ZFS file system, FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p1 and FreeNAS-8.0-RELEASE-i386

  1. I have created 1 vhd drive for the systems (like yours) end other 2 for the raid1.
  2. Copied a lot of files inside and then i have simulated (detached) one of two vhd composing the raid1.
  3. In Storage->Volume -> View all volume, status is degraded, if i view disk details i can't understand which is the "fault-one".
  4. If i try to "replace" one or another, the system work but the status remain degraded.

no problem if i use UFS

I'm using UFS. Volume reported COMPLETE after leaving it overnight, but now it's saying DEGRADED again. Console is spewing the following:

Going to pull the drive, and replace it with another on to see if the issue goes away. Perhaps the drive is just busted.

This is a good point, the DEGRADED status doesn't disappear immediately, it takes time to re-syncronize (resilver) the disks and during that time it will still show DEGRADED.

@jack.tremaine - It definitely looks like you have some kind of hardware failure. Most disks these days are such junk I barely trust any of them, that's why I have a raidz2, but even then I'm nervous.
