Question about permissions...

I got everything up and running thus far, I understand how to make users, groups, etc.

My question is under permissions/mode... what is the "Other" next to group?? I get Owner, and Group... but Other??

btw, will FreeNAS notify me of a failed drive without any configuration? Or do I need to setup some sort of S.M.A.R.T. test schedules?

Those are standard Unix permissions. Each file belongs to a user and a group, and then the read/write/execute (or traverse, if it's a folder) rights are set for the owner of the file, a member of the group same as the file, and anyone else (Other).

You should definitely set up SMART schedules.

FreeNAS will notify you by mail if you set the mail config up (remember to set the root user's email address to the one you want to recieve the alerts), otherwise you'll only get an alert on the GUI when something has alread failed and you're in danger of losing data - which no-one will notice until too late.

I did all that, and I understand what you are saying about the permissions. As I was thinking... I am mostly a Windows admin, is it possible to per say... assign multiple write permissions to a folder?

ie. I setup a dataset, and shared it. However say user1 is owner with full access, and I want a "user2" to have the same, but give everyone else "read" access. Is that possible?

Yes. You put user2 into the owner group, and then everyone else will be "other".
