I am building a freenas box for the first time so please excuse my ignorance :).

I have two USB keys, one is brand new and I bought it specifically for this installation. It's an ADATA S102 Pro. However, freenas yells at me stating SCSI status errors SCSI Sense ILLEGAL REQUEST ERROR 22. Then a gpart: Invalid Argument exception.

I have an old Sandisk Cruzer that will let me install on it just fine, but I spent quite a lot of money on this new system and I would like to put the OS disk on the more performant USB key.

ASRock C2550D4I
Crucial DDR3 1600 ECC
WD Red 3TB

Freenas 9.3

Any Ideas?

Newer isn't always better. Sandisk is probably the most popular and reliable USB drive that we see.

Performance of the USB stick is also largely irrelevant post-boot, except for cases of updates. If it's a big deal, you should go with a SATA DOM or even a small SATA SSD for boot.
