Dear,

are a couple of days that an our storage give us a problem on the alert box, that exists some sectors that are not readable:

Code:
Dec 7 08:54:16 storage smartd[2619]: Device /dev/ada4, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Dec 7 08:54:16 storage smartd[2619]: Device /dev/ada4, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Dec 7 08:54:17 storage smartd[2619]: Device /dev/ada4, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Dec 7 08:54:18 storage smartd[2619]: Device /dev/ada4, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Dec 7 08:54:19 storage smartd[2619]: Device /dev/ada4, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

and so on.
Se we have made a smartd short and long test on /dev/ada4, but contrarily to what was expect give us no errors reported:

Code:
SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description	Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
[...]
# 8 Extended offline	Completed without error 00% 383 -
# 9 Extended offline	Completed without error 00% 357 -
#10 Extended offline	Completed without error 00% 120 -
#11 Extended offline	Completed without error 00% 94 -

So, no LBA_of_first_error filled and the result of the check was fine too:

Code:
Self-test execution status: ( 0) The previous self-test routine completed without error or no self-test has ever been run

But the errors quoted before continue again and again.
Actually we have no more idea of what we can do in order to check that disk.
Someone here, can give us some glue?

Thank you in advanced.

Sometimes reported pending sectors are "false positives", in my experience this happens mostly with WD drives, though I just recently had a Toshiba doing the same, a full write of zeros to the disk may clear them, but if the extended SMART test passes without a read failure there's no harm on keeping it like that, just ignore the warnings and make sure extended SMART test are scheduled regularly.

What you showed there were the 8th- through 11th- most recent SMART tests on that disk. What about the most recent ones? Actually, make it easy on us and you--what's the full output of smartctl -a /dev/ada4?

I'm fine, or there is more checks that are better to try?

What you showed there were the 8th- through 11th- most recent SMART tests on that disk. What about the most recent ones? Actually, make it easy on us and you--what's the full output of smartctl -a /dev/ada4?

Hey danb35, have you seen my last reply with the full report?
What do you think about?

Your disk is running pretty hot: 53°C!
And I presume the other disks have the same temperature. You should cool them down. A good practice is to keep them under 40°C if you want to maximise their lifetime.

Also, it seems that you don't have SMART test scheduled regularly (or maybe you scheduled them recently since their 6400h then it's ok) and that too is a good practice.

As Johnnie Black said, I wouldn't worry much about the pending sectors, just keep an eye on it to be sure it doesn't evolve too much and that other IDs (like 196, 198) stay at 0.

Regarding error 1 and 2 occurring during the SMART test, I'll let some other more experienced members react.
