Hi everybody,
first of all, i would like to apologize if my english isn't good. Then i have a few questions about FreeNAS as i'm approaching to this wonderful world.
  • I've installed FreeNAS 9.2 x86 on an old PC just to start being friendly with those things. I attached via USB (i know, it's an orrible choice, but it's the only way) a 3TB Seagate hard drive. I tried everything, but it's still displaying only 721GB as free space. i tried ZFS, UFS, Quick Wipe, Full Wipe, formatting from Windows, from Linux, from Gparted... i don't know what else to do. Are there problems with GPT disks? Am i wrong in something? it's an x86 limit?
  • Is there any way to install OpenVPN server on an x86? i saw that for x64 version there are a lot of plugins instead x86 version...

thanks in advance for those who will try to help

You're going to have to tell us what specific hardware you're using: "an old PC" tells us nothing useful. Please read the forum rules about what information is required.

I am using an eeePC701.
Intel Celeron M900mHz
1Gb RAM

Thank you
The minimum memory requirement for FreeNAS is 8GB of ECC RAM. I suspect that you have come across some obscenely out-of-date suggestion that FreeNAS will run on any old PC hardware you have lying around. That may have been true several versions of FreeNAS ago, but it it is not true for any recent version. FreeNAS is intended for use with server-grade hardware. You really ought to read the documentation.

Your system probably does't support drives that large. You are using a modern drive with an extremely old system.

That hardware is wholly inadequate for a FreeNAS box, even if you are okay with it running slow.

You need to either get hardware more inline with what we recommend for FreeNAS, or use a different operating system.

Guys, thank you all for the answers. I know it's not the right way to use freenas but i just need to do practice.
Everything is Ok (poor performances, but i repeat i'm not looking for this) i created jails, configured trasmission, sharing... But the only thing i can't figure out is reading all 3tb from my hard drive.

Look, 4GB RAM is the absolute minimum for UFS. With jails and stuff you'd need even more RAM.

Your system is simply expected not to work and it is unreasonable to expect help with getting it to work.

If you want to run your system as a NAS, look for the older versions of "FreeNAS .7" or looks into NAS4Free. FreeNAS 9.x is not for your system because of your RAM limitation. As mentioned before, your hardware is likely too old to handle the larger 3TB drive. In the past there was a limitation in the BIOS of 2TB for a hard drive as the maximum addressable space. If you must use this hard drive in your system, look for a BIOS upgrade.
