best case: tripped overload protection, worst case: fireworks and a bbq'd system. but the latter shouldn't happen nowadays.

If it's a Seasonic, expect the former at worst.

If it's a low-end Corsair, expect the former but don't discard the latter in extreme cases.

If it's Hung-Shan-Li electronics co ltd and looks like it fell off the back of a truck in the shadiest street of the shadiest part of Shenzhen, do expect the latter, even in "nominal" conditions.

I agree. BBQs are fun!

But in all honesty, things like Seasonic and Corsair (top tier PSUs) shouldn't normally result in a BBQ. The should blow themselves out to protect your hardware. There's exceptions of course, but the common failure modes are self-protecting.
