Possible to Backup VM's complete

Is there a solution to backup the entire virtual machine, so that it can be easily restored in an emergency?
e.g. Copy the whole directory of the VM?

The essential part is the ZVOL the VM's disk is residing in. So if you set up a replication task for that you should be fine. That's what I do.

If you want a consistent backup, you have to

• shutdown the vm
• snapshot the zvol
• restart the vm
• then you can copy the snapshot to another system with zfs send
