Hi.

I run plex server on freenas 11.2. but each time I add a new file to library using windows share, I add to return to freenas to edit permission for plex to see the file.
Is there a way to make permission persistent to any file added ?

Thanks

Let's have a look at the permissions on the share. From Windows, right-click on the share, Properties and screenshot the Security tab.

Looks like Everyone has no permissions. What permissions does plex have? Also is the UID of plex 972?

What about the dataset behind the share. Storage > Pools > dataset > Edit Permissions

That is what I have to do each time for the plex to see the new files...

Can you show me the Windows ACLs (as for the first image) of a file that is first added to the share? Secondly, what do you actually do when you say you 'return to freenas to edit permission for plex to see the file'?

@JaimieV I think there's a problem with his Windows permissions. By doing this step, he's overwriting the Windows permissions with Unix permissions and 'correcting' the underlying issue.

Is your Windows box logging onto the entertainment-plex share using the plex user credentials?
I suspect he's a member of the shared group.

plex user is not even listen. I check, it is listen on files that I have manually added permission.

Now we're getting somewhere. First, does plex also have a GID of 972?

I would fix this by mounting entertainment-share to your Windows machine using the plex user's credentials. This means all your file operations are as the plex user, so there's no permissions issues.

Interested to know if there's a cunning other method, because mine only works right when you have a full share for Plex's use, and doesn't scale to more than one person except by sharing the plex creds out.

should I add plex user to rgoup shared, ta is my windows share ?

No, what I want you to do is let plex own the dataset as shown. Make sure you apply permissions recursively and save.

When you look at the ACL in Windows, you should see something like the following, with plex full access and Everyone read.

Let me know when you get to this point.

Note: plex actually only needs read access to the share, but I'll overlook this for the moment.

Some questions:
  1. Who needs read access to the share? The shared group?
  2. Who needs full access to the share? Just you?
