Yea i did that formated it as fat32 but same error after i install freenas on it again
Delete the partition altogether. Make sure you don't have any data disks connected when you try to install. And for the love of all that is holy, learn how to use your ipmi. You don't need to boot to a USB to do the install, you can use IPMI and mount an ISO.

Are you sure you need a FreeNAS?

It seems like all of this is over your head technically.

But if you can't even configure the IP address for it after being told how, how do you expect to do all the advanced stuff like owncloud and plex? It sounds like you just need a Synology.

I successfully did plex and could of done owncloud too and i rather be able expand my storage in the future if i wanted to without buying a whole new unit. Anyways i went into terminal and unmounted the usb hopefully it works this time

It seems like whatever i do (unmounting my usb and installing on an hard drive that has never had freenas on it) will not work i keep getting "this is a data disk and con not boot the system. System halted"

Did you use that drive in a zpool/volume while testing FreeNAS? Is it trying to boot to one of your other disks that has data? The error message doesn't mean it's had FreeNAS installed on it, but it's been used as a data disk....

It sounds like you just need a Synology.

Hey! Don't rip on the Synology. They're great little devices for what they are. It looks like I'm upgrading our IX2-DL's to Syno DS416slim's while I wait for FreeNAS to evolve to a point where it's usable for some of the things we need it for... kinda disappointing but what the hell.

There was no rip on the synology. I meant it. Some people aren't cut out for learning an OS like FreeNAS. For the people that don't want to learn the hardware and software, they can turn to synology.

@MontyD, I hate to say it, but you really seem to have a problem with the most basic of troubleshooting. You're getting a message saying "this is a freenas data disk and cannot boot system." How could that message be clearer? It's telling you that the disk the system is trying to boot from is a FreeNAS data disk. Since that isn't what you want to happen, you should readily be able to deduce that the system is trying to boot from the wrong device.

It's critical that you read what the system is telling you, think about it, and respond accordingly. Your posts over the last day or two do not demonstrate this ability. There will be many things in the course of administering a FreeNAS system (and really, most computer systems) that will need more than the ability to follow specific steps.

Your server is trying to boot to that.....unplug them...

Use the IPMI. Boot to the FreeNAS ISO. Install a fresh copy onto the USB.
Ok i was having trouble getting the ipmi to work but figured it out my downloading some files. Also jt looks like freenas is up and running again. I would just import my volumes now correct?
