Hey guys,

Im new here so excuse my noobiness about freenas. I just wanted to know if it is possible to run a freenas that can run a plex media server and an own cloud server at the same time. If so what kind of hardware will i be looking into buying? Im looking build something that does not use up a lot of power.

Thanks

Yes of course it can run them both at the same time. They are listed in the plugins list, right?

For hardware, you would need the same hardware we recommend for anyone. Hint: there's a recommended hardware sticky in the hardware forum

I'm using Plex and owncloud, running an Intel G3258 CPU and 16GB RAM on a Supermicro X10SL7-F motherboard. CPU usage rarely tops 30% sustained, with very brief spikes to 50-60%. The G3258 may not be enough CPU if your Plex usage requires significant transcoding (mine does not, as I carefully rip my media into suitable formats when I add it to my collection).

how much memory in terms of drives are you running and how many ghz is your processor? Im trying to make something on a budget with minimal power consumption. Ive been looking around I found a case and motherboard that will allow me to upgrade storage in the future if needed.

I'm currently running 5x 4TB WD Red drives in RAIDZ2. All G3258 run at the same speed. My idle power consumption is about 57W.

I'm confused with how you will upload movies to your plex will i manually have to remove the hdd and then upload a movie, or is there a way around that. Like through the freenas software or using mycloud?

You realize FreeNAS is a NAS software/operating system, right? You might want to look up the definition of NAS....you access your server over your network.

You've got options. You can have owncloud, cifs, nfs, ftp, or whatever all point to the same folder that Plex is monitoring.
