@pirateghost Thank you. I have Windows 7 installed on a SSD drive. It is the only thing installed, I don't even have gpu drivers. Just a clean install. I will attach it to this server and do a firmware update. Is this the IT firmware I need? My MoBo is X8DTH-6F... (X8DTH-6F / X8DTH-iF -- IPMI_8DTH R 3.04 X8DTH_304.zip IPMI Firmware)

@Ericloewe Thank you, I will purchase one (an LSI SAS 9211 or 9207) down the road, if it is needed.
I don't know why you would buy a 9211 when you have one onboard. ;) the article I linked even said so. The link you provide there is for the IPMI firmware which has nothing to do with the SAS controller. The link I sent you has the links to the SAS firmware...

Please look at yourself from my shoes for a minute...

However, It seems people here are too eager to jump to conclusions and judge others. By judging I mean being snobby and well, this whole post is a great example of how rude most are.

I have no doubt you are directing it at me for asking you to search.

So sorry for my pitty me story, but I have a lot on my plate, a lot to learn as it is, and I was hopeful this place would be more supportive than RTFM and do a effing search. BTFW, I had to google what RTFM even meant! I don't know what the hell ISCIS or what the f* it is, or any of the other BS acronyms are! I have tried read the effing manual and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Yes I am over my damn head, but I am trying to do something for my kids, so take a walk off a short plank!

Yep.. I asked you to search. Do you know why I asked you to search?

May I ask why you didn't ask me before judging me and deciding on my motives and reasons for asking you to search? Especially since you are calling me out for judging you when you clearly did the same thing by calling someone (most likely me) snobby and rude.

I asked you to search not because I'm snobby and wanted to give you an RTFM answer. I asked because you'd get more of an answer than I could provide on my cell phone trying to search the forums. There was no snobiness or anything involved. And I didn't judge, most certainly not as much as you.

There are so many Dell controllers out there I can't even keep track of what is and isn't "truly compatible" with FreeNAS. That's it. That's the ONLY reason I asked you to search. So despite me trying to help you, I feel I was judged, very quickly and very harshly I might add.

So please, before you judge me and try to tell me how I am acting, please ask yourself if you are judging, because from my perspective you absolutely are. Even to the point of being up front about what you've judged us as.

So please stop judging me (and anyone else that might be helping you) because I/we don't like being classified as judging someone when we're clearly being judged ourselves. We've got about 10 regulars and that's all. Burn those 10 bridges and you'll have zero help from anyone when you come back and have a serious problem that isn't so searchable in the forum. Yes, we're small enough that if just 5 people were you add you to their ignore list, you'll never get any kind of technical help again from the forum.

Again, I don't know what I am doing. I thought the 9211 would be a better option than on-board. I know add-on gpus are better than an on-board, so I was thinking it might be the same. Guess not, thank you for clarifying.

I was under the understanding that I could upgrade the firmware using Windows OS, then switch to FreeNAS... You said the link you provided was to update via FreeNAS...
You need to get the IT firmware from supermicro and follow their instructions to flash it.
You can use this method if you want to throw Windows on there if that would make you more comfortable for initial flash.
or you can just get the firmware and do it from freenas using the sasflash tool.

The link I provided told you how to do it on windows. It even gave links and told you what firmware files you needed.

If you have the firmware file, you can perform the flash from freenas. That's what I said. Please go back and read my link again.

Not completely...

I "took a look from your shoes for a minute", now please look from my view point... Yes, I found your post rude, and after clarification I am without a doubt ashamed of myself, truly.
However, it wasn't just you. It was the other remarks that were made. Remarks about using a lower-case and upper-case lettering, and other comments. Alone it wasn't much, but when you put together all the "seemingly rude-intended" comments,
I honestly felt that... well I guess I felt you all were a bunch of educated nerds and frankly you didn't want to be bothered with someone not educated.

Sorry for wasting your time. I don't say that to be rude, I mean it honestly. I should have went and read the info. I thought it was for updating inside of FreeNAS and I was supposed to go to SuperMicro to update via Windows OS.

Technical subjects are a hard thing to tackle. There are many acronyms and slang that are necessary to understand. When dealing with technical people, expect to be corrected on the little things like that. It is true of any hobby or technical trade. Medical doctors will do the same thing. Not because they are trying to be know it all's or not be helpful, but because they are trying to make sure you understand the difference in these seemingly minor details. Details that, to the laymen, don't mean much.

Don't take offense to that, it is quite common.

That's it, but you need P20 for FreeNAS 9.3.1 (P16 for 9.3).

The sas2flash.efi executable. It's available in some packages, instead of the DOS tool.
