Eli I wouldn't even worry about SLOG. Unless you really want to jump in but based on your components I think you are working towards a budget. I'd keep it simple and basic for now. Sounds like all of your stuff will be on your work machine before the NAS. So if the box experienced a power failure inducing a write failure you still have your data. Everything already on the NAS HDDs will still be there. It seems the KISS principle would work for 98% of the members on this board. It's power users chasing max IOPs and box performance get deep in hardware and resulting configuration complications. But still limited to the usual 1G network interface. Just something to take into consideration.

What's the numbers for SSD SLOG vs asynchronous RAM writes?

The question doesn't have an answer.

What's the block size if your workload?
Is it a sync or async write?
How busy is the zpool?
How busy is the SSD?
What's the performance characteristics of the SSD?
Is the SSD busy doing TRIM/GC?
Is the SSD good at handling small writes?
How much RAM do you have?
Have you tuned one of the 1000s of tunables in ZFS (a whole host of them affect the outcome)?
What build of FreeNAS are you running?

Every one of those questions affects the outcome of "SSD SLOG vs async RAM writes".
