I just wanted a final check on my planned build after lurking on the freenas forums for some time now.
It's pretty much a gold standard and I've read all the sticky's which did in fact help me narrow down my choices. I hope I haven't missed anything vital.

CPU - Xeon E3-1230 v3 or the E3-1240 v3
Motherboard - SuperMicro X10SLM+-F-O
Memory - Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B 1.35v
Storage - 6 x 3TB red drives [WD30EFRX]
Case - Fractal Node 804 or Lian-Li PC-V354A or the Lian-Li PC-v358
Power Supply - Seasonic G-450
O/S -FreeNas 9.3
USB -
8GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit drive

My plan was to get the X10SL7-F motherboard for the built in LSI controller. I don't really plan on expanding and felt the ports would be wasted. I plan on getting the M1015 card and cross flashing it to IT mode.

I can't settle on a case and cpu version, if anyone has any experience with the ones I've listed, I'd love to hear some feedback. I also think I could go lower on the PSU, I plan to have the maxium 8 HDD's if I plan on getting the Node 804 case.

The NAS would transcode maybe 1-2 streams and I aim is to have the hdd's in RAIDZ2 format and If I plan on expanding, I'd eventually replace the HDD's one by one.

Not much point in the 1240 vs. 1230 ... both are overkill. Any Xeon can transcode 1-2 streams. The Node 804 holds more drives and has more potential, but Lian-Li makes nice stuff too, meh. I'd pick 804. Can't go wrong with the g-450. Don't own the 804 but I'd stick with a modular supply for the tighter case. I'd also consider the 4TB drives or the 6TB on sale. 3TB is starting to drop out of the sweet spot, imho. You may be replacing these earlier than you think. 6 drives is the pefect z2 size, imho.

I'd look at 16GB USB's and possibly mirror them. Or a steal an ssd on sale for boot. However, that may be more trendy than necessary.

There's two bits. You've done a nice job working from the list, so things will likely work out well regardless of which option you pick. After that it is personal preference.

Looks good. I'm a bit confused about your position regarding the SAS controllers, but if you're planning on getting an M1015 soon, the X10SL7-F is probably a better choice (it's significantly cheaper).
