I'm planning on building a 4x4 TB NAS (for all my video files) and I heard about freeNAS having compression. I've searched the FAQ and Googled but can't find any real explanations about it.

Does it enable me to have more useable storage ? I imagine it puts a lot more strain on the CPU? What is the minimum passmark score my CPU should have if I go for these storage options?

Most common video file formats are already compressed. Don't worry about FreeNAS compression. Set up your system and use the defaults when you create your data volumes.

Simple answer: No. If you build a NAS for storage and managing files only, you do not need a very powerful CPU. If you need to transcode video from one format to another, then you will need a reasonably powerful CPU.

Cannot say any more without details about what you want to do.
