Nextcloud on TrueNAS on Proxmox

Greetings everyone,

Im a total beginner here. Former roommate has set up our NAS system. Worked great, until recently...

Nextcloud was running on TrueNAS which was installed on Ubuntu 22.04 on our small quad core atom.

All of a sudden, the nextcloud LAN IP couldnt be reached any longer.

We found out that the Proxmox VM stopped - simply rebooted it.

A short while later the LAN IP was reachable again, however, instead of the light blue Nextcloud GUI, we got greeted by that dark Truenas.

Logged in using our root account, only to find out that all of our Nextcloud users were not listed. Just the admin user was - same password (however, we are not sure if that is by design or deliberately chosen).

Anyway, we discovered that "Jail" dialog which contained a Nextcloud instance which we pressed play.

A short while later, our light blue Nextcloud GUI shows up again under this same LAN IP address.

Unfortunately, none of the users can log in, not even our admin user (which in the past DID work , and we can rule out anyone changing the password).

Unfortunately^2, we cant go access TrueNAS any longer. That nasty Nextcloud GUI is up.

Since none of us has a clue how that system is set up, these simple questions:
1. how come that truenas suddenly restarts ?
2. why would we have to manually start Nextcloud from within a "jail" ?
3. why does none of the Nextcloud users work any longer while the original root user works for TrueNAS ?
4. total desaster - can anyone help ?

Thanks !

BR !

Well, the usual answer for this is simply that the virtualization setup is wrong. Proxmox is unstable for this purpose in some cases, and it's suggested you follow the guidance at

Failure to properly set up your system with things that generally work well often lead to situations that do not work well.

Yup, we figured that the system might not be set up well by our former roomie.
(Although I have to say the VPN VM running on Proxmox too been running fine without interruption or reboot since it got set up nearly 2 years ago.)

Anyway, I wonder what would be the best way to access TrueNAS and 'stop' , 'suspend' or 'put in jail' or whatever the right word in this jargon the running Nextcloud piece. Since Nextcloud had been relaunched, we cannot access TrueNAS through web GUI anymore. Everytime there is Nextcloud coming up.

We explored around with occ command , using sudo and proper apache user but to no avail.

Any idea how we can put that Nextcloud jeanie back in the bottle ?

All we want is to access our data and then figure out how to set up the system correctly. Possibly revamp it entirely. Or simply buy an integrated HW solution altogether....

Thanks !

Probably you where seeing the Trunas UI due to the fact... the jail was not starting... I guess trunas was/is reachable on another IP

I know noting about proxmox...(beside what it is) but if you can see the console of the truenas vm you should see the possible management ip listed there...

when you are in the truenas web ui we can figure out the nextcloud access stuff...
