Joke aside, I started building my own NAS about 6 years ago. Using Debian, MDADM, a bunch of backplanes to fit 5x3.5" into 3x5.25" and 5x2TB WD Green drives in a Raid5. Over the time more drives, bigger drives, raid controllers and sas expanders got added but I never switched away from MDADM. Once again I reached a point where another upgrade is needed, the case is full with 20 drives and I decided to go all the way with a FreeNAS build.
All the hardware, except the new 8x8TB drives, are on the way and I can't wait to see how FreeNAS will perform.
