Hey everyone.

I've been running FreeNAS for 2-3 years at home. I first heard about it on the BSD Now! podcast from Jupiter Broadcasting. Its been great and pretty problem free.
Its running on an old HP desktop with the following hardware:
Phenom II x4 960T
12GB DDR3 (bad DIMM slot so only 3 DIMMs)
4x Seagate BarraCuda 2TB
Intel 1GB NIC

I have a Dell PE2950 that my employer was going to recycle. It has more CPU, more drive slots and more RAM than the HP even if it's still pretty old. I need to get an HBA before I can use it though. I should be able to order a LSI 9211-8i and the proper SFF-8484 <-> SFF-8087 cables to connect to the PE2950 backplane.

If I have any troubles I'm sure I'll be posting in the forum for help.

I would NOT do that. Too old and power hungry. If you want a good system, you can buy great used hardware for around $500, not counting hard drives. I can make suggestions if you are interested.

Glad you like the show. BSDNow exists for people like you.

Note: I would also second that advice, a PE2950 is a little too old to be useful, once something is beyond about 7 generations old, it just isn't worth it anymore, and a PE2950 is over 10 generations old.
