So currently use dropbox to share a myriad of different files over 3 computers however I need to share to at least 7.

I have a spare old computer (i5 3570k, 16gb ram) that i could run truenas on however i would like to get some key functionality from it before i commit.

I would either like it to sync in the same way that dropbox does
or
i would like to be able to open files and edit them live on the nas from any computer (most of which are remote)

What plugins would suit my needs best please.

I have looked at nextcloud, owncloud but im not sure about anything (im very new to DIY server and dont want to spend the money on a synology)

Personally, I use nextcloud for sharing files across multiple PCs, and recommend that. It is not the easiest for a novice to setup, but there are options that are easier than others. TrueNAS has a plugin for nextcloud, or you could refer to one of the many how-to guides here and elsewhere for installing nextcloud in a jail, vm, or even on a separate machine that uses TrunNAS (or any NAS) to host the files. Once setup and running, nextcloud provides all of the functionality of dropbox, onedrive, google drive, etc., but with the added bonus of giving you control and ownership of the files and data.

I caution you on this - TrueNAS really needs decent hardware. It sounds like it might not be your best choice. Any NAS can share files to nextcloud. Take a look at what you really need, what the hardware requirements are for TrueNAS, and make a decision based on that.

What's not up to par with my spec. The only info I have found is must be x86 and 8gb ram min at 1gb per 1tb. I only have 6tb that I need ATM I'm just looking to set up something that involves no monthly on going costs that can be accessed from different devices (very rarely at the same time)

If you are asking this question, then you must not have read the hardware recommendations guide.

These two statements are what caught my eye. You can't just throw together some spare parts and expect TrueNAS to work for you. For testing, sure thing. But hey, its your data... your choice.

My strong recommendation is that you read the resources available on this forum to see what you are getting in to. You very well might still decide to try, and that's your choice.
