Hello wnderful people of the FreeNas forums.

I have been lurking here for awhile now, reading all the stickies etc to build a new FreeNAS. However first let me preface why I'm going to building a freenas and what my intentions for it are, recently one of my HDDs in my desktop died and I had to send it back for RMA losing all the data in the process so here I am now on this forum to prevent this from happening again.

Essentially all I need this FreeNAS build to do is serve 1 win10 client and run the OwnCloud plugin or a similar plugin to be able to access my files at school or on the go. Optionally i'd like to stream movies to my phone but this is not necessary.

Being on a fairly tight budget(16 years old) I have come up with this configuration using some new parts and some secondhand parts from the local equivalent of ebay in my country to keep costs down.

Motherboard - Supermicro X8SIL-F (Retail pack) (6x SATA 3Gbps)
CPU - Intel Xeon X3440 Boxed
RAM - Kingston ValueRAM KVR1066D3Q8R7SK2/16G (ECC, Registered)
Above mentioned parts are used and will cost me 300 euros

PSU - Be Quiet! System Power 300W - €32,95
Case - Fractal Design Core 1000 - €34,80

For storage I am planning to use 2 1TB seagate drives of which I currently already have one of in my system as D: drive.
HDD - Seagate ST1000DM003, 1TB - 47,95
I want to use the freenas as my D: drive which I currently use for my steam library, other programs, downloads folder, documents folder etc. However this would mean that I'm limited by the 1GbE connection to my computer so I did some searching around the forum to find a solution without dishing out the big bucks for 10GbE ethernet. What I stumbled upon was this thread with someone suggesting to use Fibre Channel adapters because they are cheaper than 10GbE and provide better speed than 1GbE. So again I did some searching and found 2 Qlogic 4Gb Fibre Channel adapters for €15 used.

Fibre Channel - QLE2462-DELL - €15 without shipping
Fibre Channel Cable - Advanced Cable Technology LC-LC 9/125um OS1 Duplex 15m - €15.90

Total cost of - 446,6 EUR or 496.74 USD

Now my question to you is will this work or are there any unforseen caveats?
If you have any suggestions, comments or advice I'd be glad to hear them!

You might want to compare the cost of your build with new and used Lenovo TS140 and Dell PowerEdge T20, assuming they're readily available in the Low Countries.

Availability is reasonable. However they are priced priced way higher than in other countries, the cheapest Poweredge T20 is €525, the TS140 is only available in one shop.. Used availability is iffy and I haven't seen any of these used. I might find some cheaper on Amazon.de

I just paid $164 for my Dell T20 yesterday at http://www.provantage.com/dell-snp96mctc-8g~7DELL33Y.htm. They do ship internationally. I don't know how much shipping to the Netherlands or how import duties/VAT/taxes work in your country but it's worth checking out; may save yourself a good bit of money.

I got bored and played with their website. Apparently you can get this delivered to the Netherlands for 262 Euro.

Import duties/taxes will be about 120 euros minimum, so then it will cost me 382+ euros. I did find a TS140 for €268. However after adding all the additional parts and upgrading the ram it will cost me €415. If I haggle a bit I could probably get the price down of the used parts from 300 to 250 and then it would be marginally cheaper and more powerful.

I don't really understand why you want to spend all this money on a FreeNAS server for 1TB of personal storage on one system. Why not just add the additional 1TB drive to your PC, enable mirroring in Windows disk management to give yourself some data protection, and use any of the popular cloud storage providers to satisfy your cloud requirement?

Your post might have been a bit of a wake up call for me. I might have gotten carried away with the promises of ZFS and FreeNAS. 2 1TB drives in a normal RAID1 will give me enough protection for my purposes and just having my most important files backed up to the cloud. My 50 GB promotional Google Drive storage expires april 2016 so I might look into building a standard media server/owncloud around that time.

Sorry I have this chrome extension which replaces "The Cloud" to "The Butt", when I quoted the text it must have copied the altered version.

If it weren't for Google's massive data collection apparatus, its instability and somewhat passive-aggressive relationship with open-source, I'd switch to Chrome just for that.
