Here is my FreeNAS build, I was initially going to go AMD but decided otherwise for future support. Primary use will be file server as well as streaming from 4-6 devices (home use). In the future will need to support transcoding as well. I want to keep it around 500 excluding the drives if possible. A nice seasonic went on sale today at newegg and I missed out... darn.

Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-BL Black Computer Case
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLL-F-O uATX Server Motherboard
Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B
Intel Core i3-4170 3M 3.7 GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I34170 Desktop Processor
EVGA 210-GQ-0650-V1 650W Power Supply

2x 4TB WD Red drives (Mirrored)
30gig SSD (at least) for OS

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Also, there is a USB3.0 port on this motherboard. Would it be possible to run FreeNAS from a flash drive from that port? Or is that a bad idea? I know I read somewhere that FreeNAS does not support usb 3.0 but I cant remember if that was an old thread.

Only if you can set it to emulate USB 2.0 (real emulation). Would not really concern yourself with this since you have already allocated a 30 GB SSD (which is better IMHO)

Rest looks good to me; but I didn't check components for compatibility with each other

That board will not work with the Node 304. That board is uATX (microATX) whereas that case can only support miniITX sized boards

Node 804 will work with that motherboard.

Thanks for catching that!

I ended up going with this case: SilverStone Sugo Series SG10B
And for the OS: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB Sata III (probably entirely too big, but the 60 gig was only 2 dollars cheaper)
