I was reading netatalk docs and i see that is supports spotlight just fine

It can index share locally using tacker daemon and then allow for quick search on all connected macs


Why this feature is not implemented in FreeNAS?

Considering AFP is being deprecated, I wouldn't see this as a priority. That being said, you're more than welcome to raise a feature request.

AFP works so much better on macs than SMB and apple is going to support it for the next 5 or more years for sure

I'll be surprised if they support it past 2019, much less 2022.

Considering AFP is not supported on APFS, I doubt that very much. Apple are even pushing to switch to SMB even for Time Machine. As @Ericloewe said, don't expect it to survive beyond 2019.
