Need help understanding the grid in volume manager

The numbered grid when adding drives via volume manager doesn't say if there is anything special about stacking new drives in the same square instead of putting them in square next to each other like each new drive is in a numbered square. Hopefully someone knows what i'm talking about. Should I place place place new drives when adding them in the same stacked square or not? Thanks for the help!!
