Hello everyone,

I am having a difficult time on installing FreeNAS on my server. I have a NAS from supermicro. The processor is an AMD opteron 2346. I have 16 gigs of RAM. The RAM is PC2-5300P ECC RAM. I have 2 USB ports in the back. 0 in the front and both are USB 2.0. Here is a link to the motherboard with all of the specs: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/MCP55/H8DME-2.cfm

I have tried multiple solutions. One being going in and changing the legacy USB to boot as a Hard Disk, remove quick boot, copy the command "debug.acpi.disabled="hostres"" into /boot/loader.conf, at the boot options type in the command "set debug.acpi.disabled="hostres"". All of the solutions did not work me. I recorded a video of the boot sequence for FreeNAS. I hope that someone has the patience to go through it all and determine what the issue is and if there is a potentioal fix.

I should note that this boot log was taken when the command "debug.acpi.disabled="hostres"" was copied into /boot/loader.conf

Hello SweetAndLow.

I looked at both of the threads you posted and I do not think that the first thread pertains to me because they are booting from a VM and their work around was to delete a core. Since I am running physical hardware, I think that this will be difficult to do! lol

As for the second post, I think that I can try this later.

I have not tried an IPMI interface but this will be next in line.

Interestingly enough, there is no optical disc in my setup. I basically got a NAS with 24 drive bays. The pci slots are filled with SATA controllers.

Taking a quick peek at the link, it seems like you are suggesting that the hardware is interfering with something on the installing. If this is the case, any good methods on diagnosing which hard ware is interfering?

Ok so I got into the bios and set my installation OS to Linux. With this, I was able to set the machine to ACPI mode and it got rid of the interrupt errors. However, I am still receiving the error 19.

I created a new video showing the installation log:

Can you reset the bios to defaults? You shouldn't really have to change anything in the bios other that boot order. I don't really know what is wrong though so you might just have to play around with bios settings like you are or is incompatible hardware.

If the issue is incompatible hardware, how would I debug so that I know which hardware component is the issue

I see.

Well sir, SATA controllers (versus HBA's) do not necessarily have a good track record. Also, you are getting CAM timeouts I can see right at the beginning of the video, which is an indication of a problem with the SATA controllers, or something attached to them. As for error 19, that usually occurs when the device you have plugged in to the USB drive is trying to be accessed before it is ready to be accessed.

I think the only way to really proceed here is to try to install another OS (like Linux), and see if you have the issue. I believe someone already told you to do this. So, can we please do this?

I also suspect multiple things are wrong, by the way. I don't like those CAM timeouts at all.

Was this equipment acquired used?

Start eliminating variables. Can you boot the installer from something other than a USB? If this works it's your motherboard and it's usb ports. The problem is most likely your motherboard and the fact that it's amd.

Well, I didn't want to say that. But, yes, generally speaking, I don't like the number of atypical variables here (AMD, SATA controllers out the ass, etc). Our experience in the FreeNAS universe is that AMD can, in many cases at least, add a bit of ergodicity to what is already a complicated situation.

Thank you for the feedback, I will attempt to try these solutions and will report here.

Yes, the equipment was used and we bought it from an auction on ebay. The NAS only have USB ports to boot from. No optical drive.

It sounds like you guys have had issue with AMD boards in the past.

The NAS contains 24 2 Terrabyte HDD. The SATA controllers are on a card connected to the PCI socket. Here is a link to the HDDs that we bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXO1WQ8/?tag=ozlp-20

Here is an ebay auction of the a NAS that is exactly the same as what we have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-...352cf0e&pid=100011&rk=3&rkt=5&sd=172196219084

It is from the same guy so I am going to go with the idea that what we have and what is in the ebay auction are the same.

Lots of ways to boot without CD and usb. You can pxe boot or boot using a mounted iso through ipmi. I'm repeating myself now. Go back and read all the posts in this thread and make sure you try everything.

Boot troubleshooting 101:
  • Remove everything that is non-essential to get an interactive console
    • This includes extraneous controllers

Hello all,

I created a live boot on a USB drive for ubuntu 14.04. The NAS is able to boot into it. I clicked on try Ubuntu and I am in Ubuntu now. I think that I will attempt to boot from the IPMI.

Also, I heard from a friend that a verion of FreeNAS designed for AMD exists. Is anyone else aware of this?

Hello everyone,

I hate to ask this question but this is the first time I am booting into the IPMI. I was able to view this on the web browser on my desktop. However, as for mounting, this is proving to be tricky.

On my desktop, I have setup a shared folder with the iso in it. (the file is called shared and it is located in C:/)

Now, as for the entries on the NAS, what should I place in the Share host, Share name, and path?

For the Share Host, should I place the IP address of my desktop? For the share name, should I place the name of the folder?

I think that image path is obvious.

You want to open up console redirection then go to virtual media=>virtual storage and then mount the iso.

Hello,

So I gained access to the IPMI and went to the drive redirection. Unfortunately, I do not see the option to be able to share my drive with the NAS. I have attached the picture for all to take a look at. Maybe I missed an option some where.

My only other option is to mount the image using windows share. Under there, I have 5 options, share host, share name, path to image, username (optional), and password (optional). For the share host, I placed my IP address (192.168.40.110). For reference, the IPMI IP address is 192.168.40.100. For the share name, I made up a name and called it iso. For the path to image, I have shared/freenas.iso.

I am assuming that when the IPMI connects, it is starting at C:/. My shared folder is in C:/. I setup the shared folder to allow anyone. However, I am still receiving the mount error. I am wondering if I have the path incorrect. I know that it creates a UNC path. I am not sure what I should place for the path to image or the share name.

Also, thank you everyone for taking the time to assist me. I appreciate it. This is the first time I am setting up a NAS. Thank you all for your time and patience with me.

I think the option you want to mount a virtual CD ISO is [Virtual Media] - [CD-Rom Image]. When asked for the path to the ISO, you should be able to browse to the folder on your PC and select the ISO.

*** Depending on the software, there may be a checkbox to make it use the ISO, but I can only reference my IPMI software from Dell so it may differ for you.

*** Also, in my IPMI software I have to leave the "Virtual Media" dialog opened otherwise it will discontinue to map/mount it.

When booting up the Server, you then should be able to select a boot option and tell it to use the "Virtual CD".

*** Should not need to setup any Share on your PC to do this.
