I am setting up a backup system for several users using FreeNas 9.3. I have setup the volume. I am confused as to what is the best way to create (windows) users and how to give them a quota (if possible). Also creating their own directory (mapped drive) to log into where they cannot "see" or access any other directories.
If someone can just give the the steps in order, from creating the volume to adding a user with quotas that would be perfect.
Thank you in advance.

Make a separate dataset for each user. This way you can setup a quota for each. Make the premissions of each dataset so that the user can access it but not the rest of the world. You will need to make each user an account on the FreeNAS machine, in less you have AD already.

[Well, I did that........and now from a windows machine, it won't let me log in. Says I may have the wrong credentials? even when I disable the password, still won't let me into MY OWN SHARE!! very frustrating!!
But thanks for the help so far :)

Did you setup the FreeNAS users with the same name and password as the Windows user? If not, did you select to use different login info when mapping the drive and then input the name and password from the FreeNAS server?

Windows UserName and password is exactly how it is setup on the FreeNas box and still can't access the share. I'm really starting to hate this.

I am booting from a 32GB thumb drive. I don't want to save anything on the hard drive. i want to wipe the whole thing and start over.

Use System -> General -> Factory Restore to wipe out all your configs and go back to a fresh install.

Nope, didn't work. I tried restore and it still comes up with the same volume and datasets.

Oh, THAT. Click the pool (top line) in Storage and down at the bottom you will see an icon to detach the pool. You will then be given options to remove the permissions and destroy the data.

Love this!!
Starting over. I have 2 sata drives in the computer. The BIOS sees both and can create a RAID if I want. Instead, I boot off a FreeNas 9.3 Thumbdrive. I log into the GUI and attempt to create a Volume from volume manager. FreeNas sees both hard drives and allows me to choose both and create a Mirror. I name the Volume etc. When I click "add volume" it seems to go through its process, though it doesn't take as long as expected. NO VOLUME IS CREATED AND NOOOO ERROR MESSAGES!!!!

Ok, been wrestling with this for almost 2 weeks and am at my whits end. THIS CAN'T BE THIS HARD????? Is there anyone willing to help me setup a backup system using FreeNas 9.3? I have TeamViewer, which you can download for free, log into my computer and show me how to do this? If not, I'm saying good-bye.

You may need to wipe some or all the data off the drives to get FreeNAS to use them again. Especially the chunks at the beginning and near the end that identify it as a ZFS disk. There are references somewhere on the forum to this. I don't know if there is anyone on the forum willing to do personal support for nothing, but you might get a bit more interest from the experts if you followed the forum rules and told us about your hardware (unless you have, and I've missed it, in which case I apologise).

Intel processor i5 motherboard, sata 1tB drive, part of a "windows for workgroup" trying to connect with a Win7 computer on the same network, in the same workgroup. There is no domain controller, just a simple peer to peer network.
