Hello all! I've been spending hours and hours reading through the forums and online researching ZFS, TrueNAS, ZIL, SLOG, L2ARC and all sorts of things, in hopes of finding answers and getting the "most optimized" system.

I'm a hobbyist/DIY and building my NAS for mostly fun but also storage, streaming, and virtualization. I expect that to grow as I add more to my home lab, upgrade my network to 2.5 GbE or even 10 GbE. I might do things for research and play around.

I started off having about 5x 4 TB HDDs for storage, and have since found the lovely world of second hand enterprise equipment for cheap.

Here are the drives I have now to play with:
  • 7x 4 TB HDD (SATA)
  • 1x 8 TB HDD (SATA)
  • 2x 480 GB Intel DC 3500 (SATA)
  • 5x 400 GB Intel DC 3710 (SATA)
  • 2x 280 GB Optane 900P (PCIe)
  • 4x 250 GB Samsung 850 EVOs (SATA)
  • 3x 60 GB Mushkin Chronos SSDs (SATA)
And now I'm looking at snagging some M.2 drives... for reasons...

My system is:

CaseNorco RPC-4216
MotherboardASRock Rack EP2C602
CPU2x Xeon E5-2697 v2 (Ivy Bridge EP)
Memory128 GB DDR3-1866
(maxed @ 8x16GB, could go up to 32GB chips)
PCIe Devices2x LSI 9207-8i
1x LSI 9300-16i
2x Optane 900P (above)
1x PCIe Lane Splitter M.2 board support 4xM.2 drives
Network2x sad 1GbE devices... :(

Well that's all I can think of for now.
