Hi,

I am just starting out with FreeNAS at home and it has been fairly smooth getting up and running.

I have installed the SabNZB, Transmission, SickBeard & CouchPotato plugins and have created a shared 'Completed' storage directory on my Jails drive (see below) which is shared via SMB to my Windows machines.

I now have a confusion on the best way to go though. I wish to share my Movie and TV library so CouchPotato and SickBeard can manage. My media is on a zvol current shared out as a block device to my Windows Server.

I can change the media drive to a datastore and not go via the Windows server if that makes more sense bit if I go that route then now is the time to do it before I populate the drives.

Is there a way to share the media share as zvol easily with the jails or would it be better to convert to a datastore which I can then just use with 'add storage' to the jails or is there another option which may work better ?.

Setup;

Server.
  • Dual L5640 (6c/12t) cpus.
  • Supermicro server board.
  • 48GB RDiMM ECC ram.
  • 2x LSI 9211-8i HBAs.
  • Intel EXPX9502AFXSR 10Gbit network (dual port).
Drives.
  • Boot: Seagate 160GB (needs changing).
  • Jails (Datastore): HGST 2TB 7.2k Ultrastar drives.
  • Storage (Raid 10 --> zvol - iSCSI): 8x HGST 2TB 7.2k Ultrastar drives.
  • Unused: 2x Intel 520 120GB SSDs.
iSCSI Storage Shares (via separate Windows 2012r2 Server).
  • \\mediaServer\TV
  • \\mediaServer\Movies
Jails -
SabNZB (ip: 100)
  • Data: /mnt/completed (shared SMB)
  • Data: /mnt/nzbIn (shared SMB)

CouchPotato (ip:101): Talks to SabNZB via API.
  • No view of media library currently.

SickBeard (ip: 102): Talks to SabNZB via API.
  • No view of media library currently.

Transmission (ip: 103)
  • Data: /mnt/completed/torrent (shared SMB)

Any ideas, guides or suggestions gratefully received.

If i were you, i would definitely switch over to a dataset from your block setup. I may be a bit confused on hour you have your data setup on some of your jails. When you say Shared SMB, are you connecting to a SMB share from within the jail..? If so, that is very inefficient given all the data is hosted on the same drive the jail is. You would most definitely benefit from using datastores.

Thanks for the reply.

All the SMB shares are to external (of the FreeNas server) machines. All data shared to the Jails were via 'Add Storage' options on the Jails config and are not mounted via SMB etc.

I have converted my zvol to a dataset and have also mirrored my unused SSDs and deleted / recreated my Jails on the SSDs. I will link in the main shared storage (via 'Add Storage') afer the Jails are installed and confirm all is working well.

Thanks for the info.
