Missing Suggest Layout button

TrueNAS Noob question. I have been doing some searching and have not found anything easily accessible.

Am I missing something? When creating a pool from scratch, shouldn't there be a "Suggest Layout" button?
Is there something configuration or hardware wise that would remove that option?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Thank you for your hospitable supportive response. I have sufficient experience to proceed without the feature. My experience comes from other platforms.

I was simply curious, stumbling across a feature in the UI that was inconsistent with the documentation. My first thought was that the lack of the feature even being there might be an indicator that, for some reason, my hardware or configuration might be either unacceptable or incompatible.

You have given me clear direction and made it clear where I should go.
Good day.

So my (now moderator deleted) post was laced with a little too much Friday evening snark, so I apologize for that. It's been a long week.

You're right (and perfectly welcome) to point out flaws in the documentation or features that you see as missing.

The few points I was trying to get across were:

I don't think I've seen that feature since the version that won't speak its name.

I don't think such a feature is well advised to include.

Selecting a pool layout requires not just knowledge of the available disks and their capacities, but also the intended use for the pool being created and the future needs for expansion or performance. It would be very difficult to capture that in a process that automatically created a RAIDZ2 pool just because it found 8 equally-sized disks ready for use if the intended use was for block storage, where the right answer would certainly be a stripe of 4 mirrors.

Anyway. I hope you aren't dissuaded from using the product due to my untypically harsh (although it wasn't really that bad as far as I recall it) input.

I completely understand and my post had it's own fair share of cordial snark. I owe you an apology as well.

I agree with you and your assessment. I am not exactly new to the industry, but this is the first time I have used this product. I work for a Community College where we are working to set up a student run data center. The thought of such a button that would give an initial starting point for those that are just learning was intriguing. Your point is very valid. If such a button existed, it would have to be more of a wizard that would invoke more questions to illuminate the complexity if nothing else. It would need to generate the statements that would inspire the user to follow up on investigating the foundational concepts with hopes of leading to the best configuration.

We like the option of just being able to press a button, but you are right, we need to learn more.
From an educators perspective, having something to start with would still be helpful. Students rebel at knowledge out of context. Working with a product like this, hands on, helps to supply that context.

Thank you for your help, patience and references, and all that this community does.
Sincerely.

For anyone else that stumbles across this post, I just built 2 new servers, side by side, same install iso. One had suggest layout, one didn't. I noticed after some head scratching that the one that had the button was on https... tested, confirmed (at least for me) that the suggest layout button is missing if your not on https. Another clue I found was if your on http (button missing) and you click the ? on reset layout, it shows the suggest layout tooltip =}

Oddly enough, I just tested in incognito, once you hit the server on https, it appears to fix something, now the button is there and doesn't seem to want to disappear again. I'll have to test this, reload the OS and hit on http only, then https

I created a pool, zvol and connected isci on the 2nd server for burn-in without the button. Even deleted the pool and recreated a couple times, rebooted etc.. no button until I hit the server on https. I feel like I'm going crazy o_O:tongue::grin: I've done this so many times and never noticed before
