Guys I have been trying to get miniDLNA setupp and working for the past few days.

I created 2 dataset as per this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4zIZX8pOas

Volume Path
HOMENAS/Media /mnt/HOMENAS/Media

HOMENAS/PluginsJail /mnt/HOMENAS/PluginsJail

I was able to install the jail and used the following settings
Plugins jail path: /mnt/HOMENAS/PluginsJail
Plugin name: PluglinsJ
Jail IP: 192.168.0.12 (I just picked this, nothing else is using it)
Jail ip mask: 255.255.255.0 (got this from windows cmd ipconfig)
Plugins archive path: /mnt/HOMENAS/Media

Turned "on" the plugins and then I went to Plugins and installed the minidlna amd64 version (for version 8.2 of freenas - minidlna-1.0.22_3-amd64)

All day the miniDLNA configuration was ot appearing in the tree on the elft, but now it has appeared. I went in and added the settings and saved "successfully". When I try and turn it on I get this:

"MiniDLNA data did not validate, configure it first."

When I click on miniDLNA in the left and plugin tree - the settings are not saved? Should they be saved (like friendly name etc?)

Do you need to create a mount point also whatever that is?

I appreciate the help on this, I kow it can be frustrating helping out noobs but we all start somewhere. I have been googling this all day, the instructions are not too clear.

Thanks for at least confirming that the video is right.

I decided to delete the jail and start again. I kept the two datasets as is though - surely that can't be the issue? Do they need any special permissions? I am new to all this but I think they are root and wheel. I checked all the checkboxes for read, write etc - for each dataset. I didn't do this recursively though but does that matter?

I downloaded the latest jail which is for 8.3.0 - does it matter that I have version 8.2.0 of Freenas? Will this jail and miniDLNA plugin work in 8.2.0? Should I try and upgrade FreeNAS to 8.2.0?

I uploaded the jail and choose a different ip address this time - I picked 192.168.0.8 (its not being used I logged into my router and looked at the attached devices and there were none with this address). What is the limit of of addresses - could I choose 192.168.0.99 for example?

Is my ip mask definately 255.255.255.0? Is there anyway to check for sure? From my router there is a broadband one and a LAN one. I take it I need the LAN one?

Anyway the jail plugins would not even start - just had some generic error message "cannot start service" or something. But this happened last time also - the last time from the previous jail it finally started eventually I think after leaving it some time. So will check later when I get home. The same thing happened when I installed the miniDLNA the last time - it didn't appear in the tree, but it did eventually after some hours (no reason why it took so long). Then it wasn't saving the settings in the miniDLNA - but when I came back later - it did save the settings.

Any ideas why it would take so long to appear/change? FreeNAS is running off a USB stick. I have a 1TB hdd as the volume. 4GB Ram with AMD64 processor. This is on a laptop.

What do I need in my global configuration? The hostname and domain are filled in by default. For IPv4 Default Gateway I have 192.168.0.1 which is the IP of my router - is this correct? I have no other fields filled out.

Lots of questions here, hopefully someone can help or offer some ideas.

Anyway I am hoping to get this sorted. If not I am going to have to leave FreeNAS as a failed experiment and I am open to alternative suggestions as to what I can do with my laptop/1TB HDD. What else can I install on it that would:
1. Just close the laptop lid and run 24/7
2. Act as a file storage
3. Allow me to browse the meda (videos/photos/music) from my PS3.

I have been able to get 8.3.0-Beta2 and the MiniDLNA plugin to run. I have one issue, the first time you run MiniDLNA the plugin page will show you it's running fine. If you reboot the plugin will not indicate it's running however MiniDLNA is actually running.

I would use the jail PBI that corresponds to the version of FreeNAS you are running.

A laptop running as a FreeNAS box should work however it will not break any speed records. None of your problems would be related to the hardware you are using. Also USB sticks are not created equal. I would recommend buying a fast flash drive as it will make a difference in boot speed and any interaction FreeNAS has with the USB drive. Since you only have 4GB and I suspect you are sharing that memory with your onboard video, if you haven't already done so I recommend you hop into your BIOS settings and ensure the video is using the minimum RAM possible. Low amounts of RAM will cause problems and a lot of caching to your hard drive. Also if you are using ZFS file system, I would recommend changing to UDF as it's faster (requires less CPU power). To be honest, even though FreeNAS should run on your platform I'm just not sure it's worth the effort. If you just want to get it up and running as a NAS, try FreeNAS 8.0.4-MM 32 bit. If you like to tweak all day then shoot for the newer versions.
