2. The whole "i3 supports/doesn't support" ECC scares me, and with an E3 I don't need to worry. Of course it is quite possible I've misunderstood this issue, and in that case, point 1 still applies.

Well, I recently confirmed that my i3 4330 does support ECC (the hard, unpleasant way). So Haswell i3s seem to support ECC.

No real progress. I'm not comfortable attributing that mess to pure coincidence, it's just too crazy.
I'll have to run this by some low-level electronics people to see if anyone comes up with a plausible explanation that doesn't involve an insane coincidence.

Fortunately, the new server was sitting here, waiting for me to find the time to configure it, so recovery was easy. Let's call it an "unplanned hardware migration at 3am".
