I have given up trying to run Access on FreeNAS

To be honest: you were never running MS Access on FreeNAS. You stored some MS Access files on FreeNAS. You open those files (over the network in your case) and run them on the client. A Windows workstation for example. Unless of course you mean that you had a Windows VM on FreeNAS and you were running MS Access there.

You are right. I still run Access, but no longer try to store a multi-user file on TrueNAS.
