After I get the installation of freenas done, I will need to move about 2 gigs of data over (media). From what I've read today, it seems I would want it outside of any applications jail. Meaning don't install Plex and put it in that jail as it may complicate other applications needing it without further setup. I hope I'm making sense here. So, if I'm going to have three applications that work with the media (in their individual jails) put the media directories outside of them and point the XYZ app at them.

Any tips appreciated.
Thanks

read the section that @pirateghost referenced. In short, you want your media to live outside the jail and then just create references inside the jail that point to the media that is outside the jail. it reads more complicated then it really is. if you do this and still have problems, then start searching about permissions problems with jails as that will likely be the culprit.

My thanks to both of you, that's kind of what I thought.

Soooo Install Freenas, create first dataset, transfer media directories? Usual stuff, music, movies, series (TV)

I'm not completely clear on what you mean by "transfer media directories" but once you create your dataset, then yes, just move your media (existing folders structures if you have them are ok) to your new dataset.

Yes, that's what I meant. Existing structure on aging Dell is...
Movies/
Series/
Music/
Subfolders under them with appropriate show, movie, artist.
