I tried to update freenas to 11-U5 update via the GUI it went pear-shaped along the way and now I have a degraded system and I need help restoring my system.

How did I screw up :
1. Update Freenas to 11-U5 via GUI, system hanged up and could not reboot
2. Took the USB stick from my NAS and formatted it to burn the Freenas U5 iso on to it
3. Reinstalled Freenas from the USB stick onto one of the hard drive of the NAS (don't ask me why I did that!)

Now I have a raidz1-0 degraded and I cannot access any of my SMB shares what can I do? How do I move the Freenas back to a USB stick and restore my raidz?

From what version?

Well, there's your problem. I'm not sure what you expected, but you're minus one disk and need to resilver it.

I cannot access any of my SMB shares
Have you actually configured them or restored a config file?

I should clarify: You need to install FreeNAS to new boot media, not the data disks and you need to do that before proceeding.
