OK, I'm new to FreeNAS so go easy...

I had a freenas up and running. Version 11.0. Everything was working great. I decided to try to install openVPN on it. I found a tutorial and it was kind of long. I stopped in the middle, started poking around the freenas webgui and say that I can update (under system, update tab) my freenas. So I proceeded to update (apply pending update). It went pretty long, so I just left it running overnight.

This morning I turn on my computer and found out I can't get onto the freenas webgui anymore. I hook up a monitor and keyboard and found that somehting has frozen (didn't take a picture of the message). I rebooted the PC, I poked around some more and I finally got it back up. I found out that everything changed! My ip address, passwords, etc. That stuff is easy and i was able to set it up. But I found out I might have accidently deleted my data!! My jails are gone (I had a plexmedia going, open vpn, etc. I had 3). My volumes are gone. I remmeber seeing some folders in the /mnt/ folder. I think one of them was my media folder. and that's gone too.

Is there a way to recover this stuff? What happened? I was careful to make sure I didn't press anything that implied destroy volume or reformat.

Help!

They all say that.

It really depends on what happened to make your pool disappear and what you did when you were, "poking around"... Can you share with us (in code tags) the output of zpool list and zpool status?
It should look something like this:
Code:
root@Emily-NAS:~/scripts # zpool list

Anyways, see attached jpeg for my zpool list and status.
Let me know if you need more information.

In PuTTY, you just highlight what you want to copy and it is automatically added to the buffer. Switch to the place you want to paste it and do CTRL-V (or how you like) to paste.
Let me know if you need more information.
Try the zpool import command and it should tell you if there are any pools that are available for import.

Ok, I ran the zpool import here is what I have:

Code:
root@freenas:~ # zpool import
   pool: Server
	 id: 12411537249070974695
  state: ONLINE
status: The pool was last accessed by another system.
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier and
		the '-f' flag.
   see: http://illumos.org/msg/ZFS-8000-EY
 config:

		Server ONLINE
		  mirror-0 ONLINE
			gptid/14a3c90a-dd29-11e7-a7a3-7085c23c199a ONLINE
			gptid/196cc41e-dd29-11e7-a7a3-7085c23c199a ONLINE

What am I looking for? I think mirror-0 was my old zpool. I don't remember.

BTW - can i have avoided all this trouble if I installed freenas on a 3rd hard drive? That way the mirror is separated from the OS? Reduce the risk of destroying my mirror.

Hi! So I went bold and I just went an ran the import according to the GUI. It worked!
Code:

root@freenas:/mnt # zpool list
NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE EXPANDSZ FRAG	CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT
Server 3.62T 2.42G 3.62T - 0% 0% 1.00x ONLINE /mnt
freenas-boot 232G 1.54G 230G - - 0% 1.00x ONLINE -

I see server now. Inside server, I see my jails, media folder, photos folders etc.

But...I don't see my files. I'm a bit concerned. I hadover 10 gigs of stuff in the media folder. If freenas is registering the size to be 3.62T and the amount free is 3.62 T...that means that volume is indeed empty??? I missing a step?

I am a bit confused by your line of questioning. The boot pool and the data pool are two completely separate sets of media.
