After running FreeNAS for years, I finally just enabled email alerts. I got my first security run output this morning and I was looking at it and noticed something weird.

For my drives ADA3 and ADA4, the log shows 150MB (SATA) while my other three drives (ADA0,1,2) have 300B (SATA 2.X). When I run a smartcl -a /dev/ada4, I get

Code:
Model Family: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF)

Device Model: ST1000DM003-1ER162

Serial Number:	Z4YBKW5N

LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 087b68c15

Firmware Version: CC46

User Capacity:	1,000,204,886,016 bytes [1.00 TB]

Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical

Rotation Rate:	7200 rpm

Form Factor: 3.5 inches

Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show]

ATA Version is: ACS-2, ACS-3 T13/2161-D revision 3b

SATA Version is: SATA 3.1, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 3.0 Gb/s)

Local Time is:	Tue May 9 09:06:57 2017 EDT

SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.

SMART support is: Enabled

This shows my drive is running at SATA 3.0Gb/s which is more inline with the 300MB/s. I'm trying to understand why these two drives are showing different in my report than the other 3 drives. What am I missing here? I'm pretty technical but FreeNAS has very much been a set and forget project for me. My first goal is to make sure all my drives are configured and performing. The specs for my ASUS MB is SATA 3Gb/s for all 6 SATA Ports.

This might be unrelated, but I do know ADA4 is currently in a DEGRADED state as I'm seeing high Checksum errors in the Volume Status, but SMARTCTL long test reports the drive is fine. I'm guessing the drive is on it's way out...

EDIT: Including my hardware specs:

Motherboard is ASUS M4A78LT-M
CPU is AMD Athalon II X2 250
RAM is 8GB
HDs: Seagate 1TB ST1000DM003-1ER162
FreeNAS Version is FreeNAS-9.10.2-U3 (e1497f269)

Hardware specs and FreeNAS version are required with your post. No one can help you until you provide that info.

OK. Sorry. It's been a long time since I've asked for help. I've added the specs into my edited post above.

First of all your motherboard is only $70 so or expectations should be pretty low. You also have some other hardware problems but I'll leave that for now.

Start by checking all Sata cables are attached and double check they support sata 2. You can also try taking down the serial number of the drives and then switching the ports and and see if the problem follows the drives or the port. We can also test your individual disk speed if needed but don't worry yet.

Lastly you need to fix that degraded disk as your first step. If smart is ok the problem is probably somewhere else. I think the motherboard is the problem because it's kind of garbage quality.

Ha. Thanks for the garbage insults. This MB has worked for the last few years and it wasn't $70 when I bought it. I have a spare drive so I can swap it out with the degraded disk. I also have two cables I can swap.

Since the log and smarctl aren't showing the same thing, which is wrong?

Replace the disk then we can know more. If you provide smart output we can actually tell you what's wing with your disk.

That motherboard has realtek lan which is terrible on freebsd. It also had audio which is useless and can cause problems. I can't find any specs on the Sata controller so that makes me think it's not Intel and thats bad. Most amd systems use very cheap parts that cause all kinds of problems. Great for a gaming/Facebook machine running Windows and nothing more.

What specific smart command do you need output from?

I'm using FreeNAS as nothing more than a TimeMachine target for my Macs and for some backup storage. I don't need high performance. I work for VMware and I'm running all flash VSAN in my lab for virtual machines. I didn't splurge on a MB because I was trying to keep the build of this machine less than just going out and buying a DROBO or Synlogy box. This box has been running for close to 6 years now.

Disk replaced. Running Resilver process now...

I also swapped out the SATA cable for this drive while I was at it.

thanks for your continued help

I should add that ADA 4 above is the NEW replacement drive. Once resilver is done I can re-attach the drive in the 6th drive bay and get a smartctl for the "degraded" drive. I have 6 SATA ports but I only have 5 populated. I didn't need the extra capacity of a 6th drive so I bought a 6th drive as a backup for when one fails (which I used today)

Dude you need to run some smart tests. You have never executed one. This should be auto running weekly if you setup FreeNAS correctly.

Like I said, I set this system up like 6 years ago. I clearly didn't do it 100% right. Looking at the docs now, I don't see anything that says it's required which is probably why I skipped it 6 years ago. Who knows?

I'm still doing a re-silver so nothing I can do now around smart tests. What other hardware problems do you see? You mentioned in post #4 that you saw other ones. Until this re-silver is done, there doesn't appear to be much else that can be done so if I can dig into what these other issues are, that would be great.

With some help, the goal is to get this back to set and forget. If it ends up taking a lot of effort to maintain this, I may eventually end up going to a commercial solution. I enjoy DIY stuff, but my life is a whole lot busier these days so free time is not plentiful anymore.

I think in my signature there is a link to best practices for setup. I can't see signatures right now so I can't check.

Basically you need emails configured, smart configured and email, ups email configured, scrubs configured, static IP, backup config.

Cool. I'll give it a read. The only thing I'm missing is SMART tests. Everything else is configured.

One of the guides says NOT to use Autotune. I've been using it since Day 1. If I uncheck it, doesn't it make a difference at this point or would I need to fresh install?

Uncheck it, it does nothing important. You will also have to remove the tunable that it set. One thing that might make me not remove it is the fact that you have a realtek nic and if it's actually working I wouldn't change anything. That nic has a very hard time on FreeBSD system.

The NIC has worked from day 1. I've never had to fuss with it. Since the NIC works..should I NOT un-check it then? Your answer was a little vague.

How do you know it's a Realtek NIC? I don't see anything in the Specs or Manual about who makes the actual on board NIC

It's a gamble. Disabling Autotune should not affect the nic working.

Put another way: does leaving it checked do anything negative to performance? If I'm getting less peformance form my hardware, Ill un-check it. As for the NIC, i'd assume it working is a function of the FreeBSD NIC driver...which we know apparently works...
