Linux VM boots into installer after running for weeks on 11.3-U5

I have the situation (repeatedly) that a Linux VM (Debian 10 and 11) with UEFI running on FreeNAS 11.3-U5 works well for some time. That includes reboots, sometimes only one, sometimes many. But then comes the reboot where the boot loader seems to be gone and I end up in the Debian installer.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Did you remove the CD/DVD device after initial installation?

I had initially moved its boot priority after the virtual HDD. To be on the safe side I had now deleted the virtual CD, with the result that nothing happens at all.

Looks like you have been booting from the CD image all the time. What does your EFI partition look like? (ls -lR /boot/efi)
