I had a perfectly fine working TrueNAS system, until I moved house: new internet, new router etc. At that time, I was running the OS from the SanDisk UltraFit USB (I know, I know). When I came to booting it up, no matter what I done I noticed I couldn't find it anywhere on my network. Then I noticed the IP Subnet was different on my new router. So I hooked up a screen to see what was going on and make the necessary changes. That's when I noticed that TrueNAS wasn't booting at all! It had an error of some kind (I didn't note it at the time), but when I researched it, a lot of the comments pointed out that likely the USB has died. So I bought an SSD to change all that...

This is where the issues continued. I used a different Sandisk USB, downloaded latest Truenas core (12.0-U6), followed the instructions to use Rufus to get it flashed over. When I insert the USB, I get the boot menu (1. Boot Truenas installer (Enter), 2. Boot Truenas installer (Serial Console), etc.). I press 1 to commence the install, then always get hit with this error (used OCR so may be some slight errors - image below too):

I have tried other USBs - no luck. I have properly formatted and cleaned them to give them a new start - no luck. They are all USB 3s, I've put them in the USB 2 port and same result. I have tried a USB SD card reader and has the same result. When I use a USB in my PC and set it as the bootable drive to see if I can even get to the installer menu - IT WORKS FINE! It seems to be an issue with the USB on the MB only letting me get so far into the install. I've updated the BIOS, turned off and on as many settings as I can see that might impact based on my research. Still scratching my head. No one else seems to have had this exact issue in my searches. When I put the ISO on the SSD and tried the installation - worked fine. I would just try and used 2 SSDs - one for OS and one for ISO, but I don't have enough SATA ports as I have all my other HDDs attached. (can I remove them while I do the install, then ass them back when I go to restore my previously saved config?)
  • Motherboard make and model - Asrock H97M-ITX/ac
  • CPU make and model - Intel Core i5 4690k
  • RAM quantity - 8GB
  • Hard drives, quantity, model numbers, and RAID configuration, including boot drives - x1 WD Green 2TB, x2 WD Blue 2TB, x1 WD Green 1.5TB, x1 Integral V-Series SSD 120GB (will be for OS)
  • Hard disk controllers - unknown
  • Network cards - unknown
TL;DR - install always hangs on USB with error message: Stopped at kdb_enter+0x37 :movq $0,0x14b8476(%rip)
USB works on other systems.

Thanks in advance for your help - really appreciate it.

PS, I know my setup is janky, but it's been working swell for a long time.

I think it's possible that you don't have a good download of the ISO, so I would repeat that step at least and start afresh. Use the checksum to validate the download following the validation described in the docs.

I know you say it "works fine" in two test situations you tried but in neither did you report that it actually created a working installation.

In the case of the iso on the SSD, if you had another sata ssd you could attach that to a sata port if you temporarily remove your HDD's.

Thanks for coming back to me so quick and sorry for the delay - I ordered another SSD, and I have been able to get things back up and running that way. Unfortunately it doesn't explain the issue I was having - strange that USB would suddenly stop being accepted on my system, but not entirely.

I'll mark this as resolved (if I can figure out how!)

Glad you have it working.
AS the OP you can edit your post header. Buttons on the top of the post string. right hand side - one of them is for edit and gives you a selection that includes "SOLVED" for the subject .
