Is there a way to speed up gui response?

The GUI seems to be really slow.
I am running on a quad core atom board but it takes several minutes to open the apps menu.
help.

How much memory? Per the download page, the minimum supported memory is now 16GB. Slow systems tend to be a sign of swapping to disk.

I thought that, so I upgraded from 8GB to 32GB it shows 8GB free, are there any settings I need to change after upgrading the ram?

Don't have any other good ideas offhand. Hop on the console and check "top" output?
