Hi there,

the important server specs are: (I think so)

Smart Array B320i/512MB FBWC
(the Software RAID mode can be disabled (B320i controller)...)

1Gb 366i Ethernet Adapter

This machine is recommended candidate for a FreeNAS install? It will work ok and without problems or missing features?

Thank you,
Luis Neves

No. Read the recommenced hardware sticky in the hardware section.

SweetAndLow, may I know the reason for your objection?

Luis, yes. It's a server with ECC RAM. You'll have to swap out the Smart Array with an HBA like the HP H220 in order to utilize ZFS' selfhealing and failure detection to the best possibilities tho.

Switching out the raid card needs to happen and I only found 1 thread with someone mentioning it and I wouldn't want to use something that is untested.

Well so both of you seems correct.
The machine was not bought yet so no problem so far. I was thinking about this model because I never had too much problems working on this server family

If you would need to by some pre-made server, one for a small Business to serve as a VM repository and with storage capacity, what would you recommend? (In a price level of 2000 dollars like the HP Proliant I mentioned, and more or less in the same performance range) and compatible with FreeNAS of course

I am seeing that the most used way here seems to build from scratch choosing some tested components, but if you didnt have that opportunity, what you would choose?

It's still a proper business server with 1-2 PSUs and CPUs plus a ton of DIMM and HDD slots. Just because no one confirmed running the FreeNAS flavour of BSD on it does not mean that this server will not work.

I don't know much about the E5-2400 series from the top of my head, but I think only the E5-2420 and upwards supported Hyperthreading and Turboboost - two features I wouldn't want to miss out on. The Gen9's are still a bit too overpriced.

Another option for you may be the DL180 G6 servers with 12/14x LFF or 25x SFF bays. 48GB RAM and two L5630, L5520 or X5650 CPUs should be good for your purpose.
