I'm on the fence on which processor to get for my build. The Intel E5-1650 v3 or the E5-2630 v3; Both of these are server grade chips with support of ECC. From talking on the forum with other members they recommend going with a higher clock processor for Samba. I'm planning on using the SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRH-CLN4F-O Motherboard to go with either of these processors.
The only things I notice between these processors are the following:
- E5-2630 v3 has 8 cores vs. E5-1650 v3 has 6 cores (How will 2 extra core benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 has 16 threads vs. E5-1650 has 12 threads (How will 4 extra threads benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 runs at 2.4 Ghz vs. E5-1650 v3 at 3.5 Ghz (How will 1.1 Ghz benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 bus speed of 8 GT vs. E5-1650 v3 at 5 GT (Will I even notice a difference?)
- E5-2630 v3 has a TDP of 85 watt vs. E5-1650 v3 TDP of 140 watt (How much electricity will I save on a monthly basis 24/7?)
- E5-2630 v3 accepts up to 2 processors vs. E5-1650 v3 Uniprocessor (I'm using a single processor MB)
- E5-2630 v3 is $670 vs. E5-1650 v3 is $580 {$90 difference} (Price is not an issue at this price point)
- E5-2630 v3 has a passmark of 13,245 vs. E5-1650 v3 of 13,043 (How will this affect my rig?)

Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 specifications
Frequency - 3500 MHz
Turbo frequency - 3800 MHz

Between the pros and cons between the two, which one would you guys recommend for my built? As you some of you know, I'm building this server to mostly serve media through Plex. It will also serve files & backups for network. The MB will have 64GB of DDR4 memory. It will run VMWare ESXI 5.5 update 2 with an additional 2 OS as well as FreeNAS.

They have the same bus speed, both CPUs are rated for 5 gigatransfers/sec direct media interface. The 8GT/s QPI is for dual socket intercommunion.

Mostly depends on what your work flow will be. If you aren't transcoding much and just streaming for plex access, and don't plan on a dual socket I'd go with the E5-1650v3

Go with the 1650. Faster CPU = better for Samba. It's only 6 core vs 8 but you aren't going to notice the difference. And it's cheaper.

Smbd processes are singlethreaded, but you get at least one smbd process per user per share. As long as CPU is fast enough to saturate gigabit then there's not a whole lot of advantage to going less cores / higher clock speed.

...Until he wants to go 10G. But point taken.

anodos - do you see the 6 vs 8 cores as an issue?

I'll also second the E5-1650v3 opinion. TDP isn't the big issue, especially Haswell EP's are again lower on consumption whilst idle than their predecessors. TDP just defines the thermal envelope which the CPU can use if under full load.

Great. I think I'll be leaning to the E5-1650 v3 as I don't know if I'll be going the VM route. I wanted to go with the higher core for the VM. Many ppl on the forum are discouraging me from doing so with FreeNAS. I just wish there was more support on that front so I can be less discourage and actually jump on it since I'm investing a quite a bit of money on this setup to just run one OS.

You use jails on FreeNAS. When FreeBSD 10 comes out you'll probably also be able to run bhyve VMs, but that's a ways off.

I know I can use Jails on FreeNAS. Will bhyve be able to run on FreeNAS? I know it will on FreeBSD.
I basically want to run Kali and Windows on the same hardware as FreeNAS.

Can someone recommend a good cooling for the E5-1650 v3? I'm using a 3U chassis on a SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRH-CLN4F-O ATX Server Motherboard.
A $20 cooler will do if you think it will hold up. Budget is $60

Thanks

It's on the board's supported list.

Edit: They also have passive heatsinks but I don't know the ambient temp of your server room.

Windows is not supported on bhyve at this time. It is being worked on, but the documentation says there is no ETA. In fact, about the only thing that works on bhyve right now are some flavors of linux and BSD. That's it.

I believe you can do that with VirtualBox jails

Thanks. Just ordered the E5-1650 v3 plus the P0048AP4 fan to go with it.

Look like they are on their way (https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/announce.html)

Ahhh, this is cool!! Completing my hardware next week. FreeNAS 9.3 is looking nicer and nicer.

The windows xp fisher-price theme just made my eyeballs bleed. Thanks!
At least it's not green theme. Now that is ugly, even compared to the default.
