As the title says I'm building a file server for a small business to replace the storage role of an old Windows Server machine.
The budget is pretty low, nowhere near TrueNas prices, but I estimate i have enough to put together a decent FreeNAS machine with room to grow.
My choices for hardware so far are:
SERVER:
Supermicro SYS-6028R-TR
It's a 2U dual-socket server with 8 3.5" bays
CPU:
1 x Xeon E5-2620 v3
A single (for now, might upgrade later to maximize ram) 2.4 GHz Haswell hexa-core that turbos to 3.2 GHz
Can't go higher price-wise, but I'm guessing it will be enough for a good while.
RAM:
4 x MEM-DR416L-HL01-ER21
That code is on the Supermicro Compatible Memory list.
64 GB should fit my 'working set' for now and upgrading later shouldn't be a problem.
I'm not going to use deduplication, compression or encryption.
DRIVES:
2 x WD RE 4TB WD4000FYYZ
Configured as ZFS mirror.
I have 1.something TB right now and growing (rough estimation) by a few hundred GBs per year. I'm thinking these drives should be enough for the first two years or so, without experiencing slowdowns as ZFS fills up.
Usage:
SMB shares (active directory integrated) with snapshots.
No NFS or iSCSI. No jails/VMs planned.
I still need some recommendations for boot device. I'd like to avoid using the drive bays for this, so I'm leaning for USB sticks. Might get two and mirror them if they're not too expensive.
I also plan on buying a second-hand server and replicating the datasets to it, but I should probably open a separate thread for it, right?
