I'm on the fence on which processor to get for my build. The Intel E5-1650 v3 or the E5-2630 v3; Both of these are server grade chips with support of ECC. From talking on the forum with other members they recommend going with a higher clock processor for Samba. I'm planning on using the SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRH-CLN4F-O Motherboard to go with either of these processors.
The only things I notice between these processors are the following:
- E5-2630 v3 has 8 cores vs. E5-1650 v3 has 6 cores (How will 2 extra core benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 has 16 threads vs. E5-1650 has 12 threads (How will 4 extra threads benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 runs at 2.4 Ghz vs. E5-1650 v3 at 3.5 Ghz (How will 1.1 Ghz benefit me?)
- E5-2630 v3 bus speed of 8 GT vs. E5-1650 v3 at 5 GT (Will I even notice a difference?)
- E5-2630 v3 has a TDP of 85 watt vs. E5-1650 v3 TDP of 140 watt (How much electricity will I save on a monthly basis 24/7?)
- E5-2630 v3 accepts up to 2 processors vs. E5-1650 v3 Uniprocessor (I'm using a single processor MB)
- E5-2630 v3 is $670 vs. E5-1650 v3 is $580 {$90 difference} (Price is not an issue at this price point)
- E5-2630 v3 has a passmark of 13,245 vs. E5-1650 v3 of 13,043 (How will this affect my rig?)

Between the pros and cons between the two, which one would you guys recommend for my built? As you some of you know, I'm building this server to mostly serve media through Plex. It will also serve files & backups for network. The MB will have 64GB of DDR4 memory. It will run VMWare ESXI 5.5 update 2 with an additional 2 OS as well as FreeNAS.
