A micro-buglet:

The download site calls the latest update 9.3.1, but in the GUI it's shown as FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201508250051 (i.e., still 9.3, not 9.3.1).

I'm pretty sure that's by design as it's still part of the 9.3-STABLE train.

I still don't like it. Then what's the point to calling it 9.3.1 if it is, essentially, just another update?

I can understand the value of a specific release as a milestone, like Microsoft's Service Packs of old. A more user-friendly "base version" String or something similar would be cool, though.

Agreed. Either it's 9.3 or it's 9.3.1. At the very least, we should have consistency between interfaces.

I thought one of the benefits of 9.3 was its (for lack of a better phrase) rolling update model, as opposed to the milestone update model of the past. The "new" 9.3.1 confuses me on that point :p. Perhaps we should be calling it "9.3 rollup 1" or something like that, to avoid confusion with the version number.

Was talking to some of the guys yesterday.

I guess one of the main reasons it's known as "9.3.1" was that the LSI firmware/drivers were updated to v20 from v16, which is a potentially major, serious, upgrade, for a lot of big pool users. (Good news: seems to be working for everyone). It was felt that changes of this magnitude warranted a commensurate versioning number change.

I mean, let's be honest with ourselves.. if I ask joerandomuser what version he's on.. he's gonna go to his WebGUI and see it says 9.3-stable and he's gonna say "9.3".

If the WebGUI doesn't SAY 9.3.1, then people asking questions aren't gonna get it either.

I just don't get how this crap happens. /cry

For the past week, at the top of this page there is a link
Download Latest 9.3.1 STABLE
I wonder what a joerandomuser thinks upon clicking on it and getting
You don't have permission to access /9.3.1/latest on this server.

Probably the first words are I love consistency in naming... :)

They've moved the 'latest' folder back to its previous place. No doubt the link will follow (sic) soon.

I do agree they need to indicate the x.x.1 version in a way that can be displayed on the GUI without breaking anything if they are going to use it at all.

Edit: the only thing I can think of is a new "train". And just shunt 9.3-STABLE into a siding where those who want it can find it.
