Just checking.
Does the Microserver Gen 8 support NVME?
As usual it is difficult to be certain but some posts suggest not.
In which case a SATA based option may be the only way.

Oh, and while I'm asking things.
I've loaded Mint 8 on (just because I had a DVD there to hand) and it complains that it doesn't have a driver for the video hardware.
Is this an issue with FreeNAS?
I can see that it may not be an issue if I'm not using the screen much.
Also I could fit a cheap video card.
However working without changes would be good.

No, the FreeNAS console is strictly text-mode VGA.

Late to the thread, but you can pickup HP H240 cheap (I just picked one up for $30 on ebay), it supports 12GB SAS3, versus the B120i 6GB drives. Stick with HP hardware though, otherwise crap freaks out and fans run at full blast., at least that is my experience with HP hardware and non HP cards mix, but I don't use the microservers, I have 2 DL360p G8s and 2 DL380p G8s (1 is the 25 SFF, the other is the 12 LFF chassis).
